Way Kambas National Park (130.000 ha) lies on Sumatra's southeast coast in the province Lampung and easily reachable with the ferry from Java. It consists of swamp forest, lowland rainforest, mangrove forests, dry beach forests, Nibung swamps and vast areas of grass-land.

 

The park is famous for his Sumatran Elephants of which a large number comes from the Elephant Training School Pusat Latihan Gajah. Moreover, the reserve supports over 270 species of birds.

 

From Jakarta you need to fly to Bandar Lampung, Way Kambas national park can be reached by bus or by car that takes two and a half hours journey.

TOUR ITINERARY :

 

DAY 01 : ARRIVAL BANDAR LAMPUNG – WAY KAMBAS – NIGHT WALK (D)

On arrival meet by guide and transfer to Way Kambas for overnight. After dinner, Guide will take you on his of his exciting night walks where hopefully you will see night bird, and mammals. You may even see a wild Elephant.

 

DAY 02 : ELEPHANT SAFARI + BAMBANGAN (B,L,D)

After breakfast, you will proceed to The Way Kambas Elephant Training Centre where you will be assigned a mahout and an Elephant. Remember to take some sugar cane from the Lodge garden to give to your Elephant to cement your relationship. You proceed for a ride in the forest (30 - 60 minutes according to your taste). Then depart to Bambangan. This is new and important reafforestation area 10 km from the Elephant Training Centre. You will finish your visit to the Elephant Centre, then travel in 4 wheel drive vehicle to the Savanah near forest. Picnic lunch. A short walk 20 minutes, through forest to a river where you will see birds, perhaps the endangered white-winged duck, on returning to the Ranger station. You can plan the tree, which contributes to the future of the National Park, on the way back you may be lucky enough to see wild elephant, deer or forest pig. Picnic lunch. Back to lodge for dinner and overnight.

 

DAY 03 : RIVER BOAT + WALK TO KALIBIRU (B,L,D)

Morning you will drive slowly through the Park to Way Kanan stopping to see and hear the Siomang Gibbons calling. You will then take a boat to Kalibiru (around 60 minutes). Then you will proceed on a fascinating walk either to a game viewing platform or to Rawa Gajah, a swamp area where often Elephants are seen. Depending on the season, this area is grassland or under waist deep water. Sambar deer, wild pig, binturong and the endangered white winged wood duck have been seen here. The trail often shows scats, pug marks and tree scratching of Tigers. This makes the trip really exciting. Picnic lunch on the park. After a picnic lunch, you will walk slowly back to the boat and who knows what you may see on the river on return, hopefully primates, different bird species, deer and maybe elephants. A great days wildlife experience. Back to lodge for dinner and overnight.

 

DAY 04 : BIRDING, SIOMANG GIBBONS – BANDAR LAMPUNG – PADANG (B)

Take an early bird walk with Guide and also see the village activities or cycle to hear the Siamang gibbons with one of the Park Rangers to see and hear the haunting calls of the Siomang Gibbons returning to the Lodge for a well earned breakfast. After relaxing breakfast transfer back to airport for flight to Padang.

 

FLORA :

This beautiful park is very representative of the lowland forest ecosystem consisting of freshwater swamp forest, meadow, scrub, and coastal forests in Sumatra. This area consists of freshwater swamp forests, desert scrub and forest /brackish / beach with flora types namely: Api-api (Avicenia marina), Sonneratia (Sonneratia sp.), Nipah (Nypa fructicans), Gelam (Melaleuca leucadendron), Salam (Eugenia polyantha), Rawang (Glocchidion boornensis), Ketapang (Terminalia cattapa), Sea Pines (Casuarina equisetifolia), Pandan (Pandanus sp.), Puspa (Schima wallichii), Meranti (Shorea sp.), Oil ( Diptorecapus gracilis), Merbau (Instsia sp.), Pulai (Alstonia angustiloba), Pterospermum (Pterospermum javanicum), Keruing (Dipterocarpus sp.), Laban (Vitex pubescens) and others.Plang Hijau - Way Kanan (13 km) 3 hours From Way Kanan, by boat along the rivier Way Kanan to the river mouth in Kuala Kambas

FAUNA :

Also in this National Park presented a habitat for Sumatran rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus), Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrensis), tapir (Tapirus indicus), Honey Bear (Helarctos malayanus), Coyote (Cuon alpinus), Deer ( Cervus unicolor), forest Chicken (Gallus Gallus), Rangkong (Buceros sp.), gibbons (Hylobates moloch), Red monkey (Presbytis rubicunda), Siamang (Hylobates syndactylus), Forest Duck (Cairina scutulata), of Little Snake Bird (Anhinga melanogaster ) and so forth.

 

BEST SEASON TO VISIT :

The best visiting season from July to September. Some locations or attractions to be visited include:

 

1. Elephant Training Center (ETC) presented at Karangsari. Wild elephants which are trained in the Elephant Training Center (ETC) situated 9 km from gate Ijo signpost was founded in 1985 and has produced about 290 trained elephants. The elephants can be used as elephant riding, attractions, transport of wood and plow fields. At the Elephant Training Centre can be witnessed Coach and educate and train wild elephants, elephant attraction witnessed a very unusual (to play ball, dance, shake hands, respectfully, draping flowers, pull the rope, swimming and many other attractions).

2. Way Kambas, filed for camping activities.

3. Way Kanan, space for research activities and the Sumatran rhino captive breeding facility and guesthouse natural laboratory researcher.

All our itinerary component is flexible and can be modified to suit your interest and preference. Our standard is usually using 3 star hotel with standard AC transportation, but if you wish to have higher standard of accommodation and transportation, we  are more than happy to provide the suggestion except in some remote area where only available standard transportation and non star hotel for example in Borneo, and Papua
