MOUNT SEMERU TREKKING

 

Mount  Semeru trekking the highest volcano in Java, 3.676 meters above sea level, and one of its most active, lies at the southern end of a volcanic massif extending north to the Tengger caldera, also called with the famous name Mahameru (Great Mountain). Gunung Semeru was constructed south of the overlapping Ajek-ajek and Jambangan calderas. This volcano is located in the regency of Lumajang and Malang, East Java and lies along anN-S trend cutting through the summit, and cinder cones and lava domes occupy the eastern and NE flanks. Semeru has been in almost continuous eruption since 1967. The continuous activities for the past 41 years, attract everybody from all over the world to explore the beauty of this friendly volcano.

 

Both in 1913 and 1946, the crater Jonggring Saloko, reached the highest peak up to 3.744 m, then in early 1973, due to the lava and hot lahar flew to the south part of the volcano till the village of Pronojiwo and Candipuro in the regency of Lumajang.2.990 explosions were noted, occurred in November 1997. On the top peak of this Vulano, all visitors are advised not to get the crater of Jonggring Saloko, as well as not to climb from the southern path, due to the poison gas and the sudden stream of hot lava. The average temperature of 4 – 10-degree Celcius can be felt on top, meanwhile in the dry season (summertime in Northern part of the world, North America and Europe, round June – Sep, the temperature can be dropped up to 0 (zero) degree Celcius, where the visitors can find the light crystal ice. The hard blown wind can happen in Dec – January, in which some storm follows. All characteristics of Semeru will bring the uncomparable memory to everybody ever experience the beauty and the mystery of this Java highest volcano.

 

 

MOUNT SEMERU TREKKING TOUR PROGRAM :

 

DAY 01: SURABAYA AIRPORT – TUMPANG – RANU PANE
Upon your arrival at Juanda International Airport of Surabaya, our staff will pick you up. Then transfer to Tumpang village, here you will have a medical checkup. Then we will continue by 4WD jeep to Ranupani Village (2.200 asl), the road is passing via Gubuk Klakah and Ngadas villages, it will take around 2,5 to 3 hours drive and 28 km from Tumpang. We arrive at the Village in the afternoon, check in to the local homestay.

 

DAY 02: RANU PANE - RANUKUMBOLO - KALIMATI
After breakfast at homestay, we start trekking to Ranukumbolo (2400 asl) by crossing the hills track and tropical forest, it will take about 4-5 hours. Having lunch by the lake and at the same time enjoy the beautiful scenery. After lunch, we start trekking to Kalimati (2.700 asl) about 2,5 – 3,5 hours through Oro-Oro Ombo Savannah, Cemoro Kandang Pine Forest, and Jambangan Forest. On arrival at Kalimati Campsite, our team will prepare dinner, and then you can rest.
Overnight: Camping

 

DAY 03: KALIMATI – SUMMIT – RANU KUMBOLO
In midnight after having a snack, we start climbing to the summit of Semeru Mountain (3.676 M), in 4-6 hours, we will have a spectacular sunrise view when the weather is good and the sky is clear. You can rest at the top, taking pictures and having hot tea. After some rest, we will go down to Kalimati campsite for brunch, then continue back to Ranu Kumbolo lake. When we arrive, we will have lunch. Then you can rest or if you choose to explore the lake, the guide will accompany you. 
Overnight: Camping

 

DAY 04: RANU KUMBOLO – RANUPANI 
In the morning after breakfast, we start hiking back to Ranupane Village for 4 hours, having lunch in the homestay, and then you will directly transfer back to Surabaya, through Tumpang and Malang. Please take the night flight (after 8 pm) if you plan to take a flight from Surabaya.

Mount Semeru Trekking Accommodation

Ranupane Village: A very standard homestay at the village, the toilet is outside the room, the room is base on twin sharing basis.

Bromo Area: The hotel is a non-star hotel with the standard facility, but has the best view to Bromo and the sea of sand. If you want to stay in a resort, please advise, because we normally will offer the non-star hotel.

GEAR LIST FOR MOUNT SEMERU TREKKING

It is very important to have appropriate equipment for trekking. It's frustrating to be uncomfortable, inconvenient or unable to do all you want because of improper equipment, and of course,  it can even be dangerous. Pack carefully following the list below. Don't overload yourself or the porters. Please notice you only carry your personal belonging such as a camera, passport and other personal belonging such as cloth and other gears for trekking on the climbing trip and keep the rest in the hotel. So please bring duffel bags to safe your personal things not to use on the climbing trip.  The porters will carry all the climbing gear such as tents, mattresses, sleeping bags. Above all please do make sure what you bring is suitable.

LUGGAGE:

* 1-day pack – you will carry this with you: raincoat, water for during day trek, snack, light jacket, camera, and other that you will need.

* 1 backpack or rucksack – for the porter: change clothes, sleeping back, jacket, sleepwear, and others you will need for the 2 days 1 night

* 1 small duffel bag or suitcase: Items not needed on the trek can be left at the cottage. This bag should also have a lock.
